      What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive element that is part of the radioactive decay chain of naturally occurring uranium in soil.  Youn can't see radon.  Ou can't smell radon and you can't taste radon.  Unlike carbon monoxide and many other home pollutants, radon's adverse health effect, lung cancer, is usually not produced immediately.  Thus you may be exposed to radon for many years without ever suspecting its presence in your home.

Getting a radon test or mitigation

The EPA recommends hiring state licensed or  NEHA-NRPP or NRSB certified radon testing and mitigation professionals.  The state of Illinois require that any person who anticipates conducting radon-related measurements, mitigations, or laboratory analysis services shall receive the license prior to providing services in Illinois.

      Testers

      Picture
IEMA strongly recommends ALL homebuyers have an indoor radon test performed prior to purchase or taking occupancy of your new home.  It is not in the best interest of the buyer or seller to rely on a radon measurement performed by anyone other than a licensed measurement professional.  EBI residential radon test are performed using Sun Nuclear's 1028 and 1029 electronic radon testers.  They are programmable for duration, interval, and delay.  Once the test is completed the licensed technician will print and explain the results to you.

You just had a radon test, and your radon levels are above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, what do you do next?

      Picture
Radon mitigation is the process of reducing radon gas in a structure to a safe and acceptable level.  You just had a radon test, and your radon levels are above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, what do you do next?  Your next step is to look into getting a radon mitigation system installed.  Extraordinaire Building Inspectors is a licensed radon mitigation professional.  We will review your radon test,; evaluate your home; and provide you with a free estimate to mitigate your home.  Click here to contact EBI today to schedule your radon mitigation today.

First, don't panic.  Radon is everywhere and capable of being fixed.

Second, contact a radon mitigation professional licensed by IEMA-Division of Nuclear Safety to reduce the radon in your home.  Make sure you get two or three price estimates from licensed radon mitigation professionals.  The cost of a radon mitigation system generally ranges from $750 to $1500, depending on characteristics of your home and the radon mitigating methods used.

Third, once your radon mitigation system is installed, talk to your mitigator and be sure you understand the mitigation system.

Fourth, get a follow-up radon test to ensure your radon mitigation system is reducing your radon levels to a safe level.

Finally, don't forget EPA recommendations to have your home test for radon every two years.
